Glasgow is easily accessible by rail or road links – with Glasgow Central the main train station for arrivals from the south and Glasgow Queen Street from the north. There are excellent motorway connections to the city. You can also arrive into Glasgow International Airport and make use of the regular airport shuttle bus service which will take you right into the city centre.

The Emirates Arena is located in the East end of Glasgow, linked to the Emirates Arena and opposite Celtic Park. A purpose-built facility for the 2014 Commonwealth Games, it provides a spectacle for a whole range of different sports, including athletics, basketball and netball. It is easy to access – with regular trains to Dalmarnock or Bridgeton, local taxis or walking and cycling from the city centre.

About the Event

The 2023 UCI Indoor Cycling World Championships will take place in Scotland for the first time, at the Emirates Arena – a multi-sport facility in the east end of Glasgow. This event will be a spectacle of Cycle-Ball and Artistic Cycling with three days of competition including qualifying and medal ceremonies each day.

Cycle-Ball

Cycle-Ball is also know as ‘RadBall’ and is exactly as described – it’s football, on bikes! Matches of 7 minutes per half are played by teams of two and the aim is to score more goals than your opponents. Front and rear wheels of the cycles are used to strike the ball and the skill to hit the ball and volley it into the small goals using the bike is incredible. There is a referee who will be on hand to award free kicks and penalties.

Austria are the reigning World Champions in this event, having beaten Germany in the final in 2022 in Ghent.

Artistic Cycling

Artistic Cycling is a scored event – where competitors set a score based on the moves they will incorporate into their 5-minute performance and the commissaire judges then deduct marks from. In the team events it’s all about the quality of the moves, alongside the synchronisation between the riders. It’s hugely popular in Germany who dominate all categories and will be favourites to take the titles here in Glasgow. There are categories for Single, Pair and Quad.

The skills on show in Artistic Cycling are like no others seen across these Championships. The performers will balance on their fixed-wheel bicycles for the duration of the routine – spinning in circles, balancing on one wheel and performing aerial acrobatics including handstands and leaps from saddle to handlebars.

Six-time World Champion Lukas Kohl from Germany will be vying for his seventh title, while his country woman Jana Pfann is coming into this event as the reigning world champion. The German Pair of Caro Wurth & Sophie Wohrle matched the German ACT 4 team to also take Gold in Ghent at the 2022 World Championships.
