3 - 9 August

The UCI Individual Track & Para Track World Championships will take place over seven days at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow. This purpose-built velodrome was completed for the 2014 Commonwealth Games and has become a firm fixture on the international track cycling calendar since. Track cycling is one of the most varied cycling disciplines – and the unique feature of this event brings together able-bodied and para athletes into one World Championships. With sprint events where riders will be flying round the track for less than 10 seconds, to the endurance effort 200 lap (50km) men’s Madison there is something for everyone, and all at crazily fast speeds and thrilling moves. Riding on fixed gear bikes, the riders have no brakes and use their skills and track craft to navigate through bunches and launch their sprints. It all comes down to a lunge over the line, whether it’s a time trial event or a bunch sprint. You don’t want to miss this unique opportunity to watch this captivating event in a bouncing arena with so many different opportunities for riders to take home a rainbow jersey!

About the Track & Para Track Cycling Events

INDIVIDUAL SPRINT

Individual sprint is part of the Olympic programme. This event is raced by both solo riders and tandem category which is breath taking to see live!

Qualification 200m time trials are followed by knockout heats of 3 laps that select the best two riders to line up against each other in the final. Riders sometimes come to a standstill to make their opponent take the lead – the least advantageous position before the final sprint to the finish line.

TEAM SPRINT

Team sprint is part of the Olympic programme. This event is raced in both the able-bodied World Championships and the Para World Championships. For the Para events there can be mixed teams of male and female riders and their classifications are used to determine what category of rider can make up the team. There is also a new event from 2022 – Tandem team sprint – where teams of two tandems from each Nation will compete over four laps of the track.

This is raced by teams of three over three laps of the track. Two teams start on opposite sides of the track, with each rider leading for a lap before peeling off. The final remaining rider for each team sprints for the finish to establish the team’s time.

TIME TRIAL

These events will be raced by all categories of riders – including solo bikes and the tandems. For Men and all tandems it’s a 1km Time Trial, while the women will race over 500m. This event is all about going flat out in search of the Championship and a possible World Record along the way.

Two athletes ride simultaneously during qualifications with the 8 fastest going through to the finals. The finals are raced as an individual time trial from a standing start. The competitor with the fastest time is the winner.

KEIRIN

Keirin is part of the Olympic programme. This event will be raced by the Men and Women and is an event that you can be sure to see drama in with shoulder to shoulder action at extremely fast speeds.

Riders follow in the slipstream of a pacing motorbike for 750m before undertaking a three-lap sprint to the end. The motorbike gradually increases the speed from 30 to 50 km/h before pulling off the track to allow the sprint to begin.

INDIVIDUAL PURSUIT

This event will be raced by the men and women, tandems and the classified para riders. It will challenge the riders pacing and stamina with the aim of finishing the race stronger than they started.

Two riders start on opposite sides of the track and compete over 4km (3km for women). The winner is the rider who manages to catch his/her opponent or who records the fastest time.

TEAM PURSUIT

Team pursuit is part of the Olympic programme. Both Men and Women will take to the boards in this event and it’s a test of endurance, skill, team work and quick decision making.

Two teams of four riders start on opposite sides of the track and compete over 4km. The winning team is the one that manages to catch its opponents or that records the fastest time.

POINTS RACE

Both Men and Women will race in this event. This is a bunch-start race of around 25km for women and 40km for men. Riders can gain points during sprints (one every 10 laps on a 250m track) and by lapping the rest of the field (+20 points). The final result is calculated according to the number of points won. Points awarded in the last sprint after the full distance are doubled (10 points, 6 points, 4 points, 2 points).

MADISON

Teams of two riders take part in this relay race contested by means of intermediary sprints (every 10 laps). While one team member races, the other slows down to take a rest before being thrown back into the action with a hand sling from his/her team mate. The classification is calculated according to the number of points won. As with the points race, any team that gains a lap on the main bunch is awarded 20 points, while any team that is lapped by the bunch has 20 points deducted. Points awarded in the last sprint after the full distance are doubled (10 points, 6 points, 4 points, 2 points).

SCRATCH RACE

Both men and women, and the classified solo para riders will compete in the Scratch race world championships. This event seems simple enough but as tactics come in to play and the endurance to hold the distance it can throw up some real surprises.

This is a mass-start race for individual riders over 15km for men and 10km for women. The first lap is neutralised. This is a simple event format – the first rider to complete the designated number of laps and cross the line is the winner.

OMNIUM

The Omnium will be contested by Men, Women and the para riders on solo bikes. It is extremely exciting as it can all come down to the final event of the day and with bunch racing throughout nothing is ever certain!

The Omnium is made up of 4 bunch events raced on the same day: scratch race, tempo race, elimination, and points race. Riders must show consistency throughout the day to have a chance of topping the final classification as points are awarded based on the rank for each event and a general classification is generated at the end of the 4 races. The points won in the final points race are directly added to the intermediate classification creating reversals of situations and suspense until the last sprint where points are doubled.
