Real Rider Reviews
We get up early and ride parts of stage 18, 19 & 20 taking in the Izoard, Galibier, Iseran, Tignes & Val Thorens.
On each stage, we set up a stand on the key climb and have a picnic and beers as we watch the world's best riders battle it out.
On Wednesday we head over to Alpe d'Huez and ride the Col du Sarenne & the classic 21 hairpins of Alpe d'Huez.
John is our Tour legend having worked in a pro team and written numerous best selling cycling books. He is a source of great knowledge on the Tour and loves this part of the Alps. He is the overall tour leader who will look after anything you need and will make a mean sandwich for our picnics on the climbs.
Gregoire was brought up in the Alps and as you might expect, is a pretty decent climber. He knows these roads like the back of his weird cycling sun tan hands and loves to lead groups over his home terrain.
Take on some of the most iconic climbs in the Alps. On our 9 night trip we leave the Etape weekend with a ride over the Col de la Madeleine & Telegraph. The next day and first day of riding for our 5 night trip takes us to Alpe d'Huez where we ride over the Sarenne & Alpe d'Huez. The next three days follow the Tour riding in the morning before the pros arrive. We ride the Izoard, Galibier, Iseran, Tignes & Val Thorens before watching the pros showing us how its done.
One of the highest paved passes in Europe at over 2,600m. This is a glorious, varied climb with hugh views in all directions. Enjoy!
One of the most famous climbs in the world, the 21 hairpins from Bourg d'Oisans to Alpe d'Huez. A relentless climb averaging 7-9% the whole way.
One of our favourite climbs in world cycling. Starting with the gauge ride from Giullestre, the climb proper starts as you turn left off the main road and gets more and more beautiful. As you get close to the top you see the famous memorials to Coppi and Bobet as you ride through cliffs with amazing views down the valley.
The 9 night package starts with 4 nights in Brides les Bains with a warm up ride on Saturday, Etape on Sunday and rest day (with optional short ride) on Monday. Then we ride on Tuesday over the Madeleine and Telegraph to Valloire and follow the rest of the itinerary below:
Arrive at Geneva before 5pm and for our transfer. We arrive in Valloire just before 8pm in time for a welcome dinner and our mechanics will get your bikes ready for a start in the morning.
We ride out of Valloire straight into the Galibier, a classic climb topping out at 2,645m. From here, it is downhill all the way to our second climb. We have a choice of two options, one going up the Sarenne before descending to Bourg d'Oisins before a climb of Alpe d'Huez and the other group going for a slightly easier day descending straight to Bourg before climbs the Alpe. Before the split we grab a sandwich and then regroup again in a cafe in Alpe d'Huez for a transfer back to Valloire.
We have two options for today. We will transfer in the van over the Galibier to Briancon. The short ride is Briancon up the Lauteret and then onto the Galibier (the other side to yesterdays ride) where we will watch the Tour. For the longer ride, we will continue in the van to Giullestre and ride the Izoard and then Galibier. We need to be off the road early so this option is only available to strong riders.
We set up camp on the Galibier and have some beers, sandwiches and snacks including our favourite local delicacies - tourtons. After the riders go through you can descent into Valloire to see the teams or jump in the van with us.
We head down to Modane to start our ride today - a short but punchy ride over the Col d'Iseran and onto Tignes where we set up camp to watch the pros. The Iseran is one of the highest passes in Europe at 2,764m and this will just be the 8th time to Tour has gone over it. After the stage, we get in the van and head to our hotel in Brides les Bains which will be our base for the rest of the trip.
A more leisurely start as our ride today is relatively easy. We head out after breakfast for the 40km spin up to Val Thorens where we watch the Tour one last time. This should be the critical stage just before Paris as three epic Alpine stages culminates with the 33km climb to Val Thornes at over 2,300m.
