Long feted as a cycling mecca in Europe and home to many a World Tour Pro, Girona’s pedigree is well known. What many don’t know is that Girona plays host to some superb gravel routes. With our experienced gravel riding support team & our local guide we will explore the hills, forests and beaches in almost perfect isolation. There is one classic climb on the trip, the stunning Rocacorba which we tackle on Saturday. Whether you’re an experienced off road rider or new to the discipline, gravel riding makes for a more social experience and novice gravel grinders are more than welcome!
Real Rider Reviews
One of the most interesting in Catalonia, the historic city of Girona invites visitors to trace its more than 2000 years of history through two fortified enclosures, the Força Vella and the Medieval Quarter. The range and quality of restaurants and cafés must be seen to be believed.
Girona’s most famous climb snakes up from Lake Banyoles finishing in a jaw dropping view when you finally summit next to the radio masts. 14km at an avg of nearly 6%, this is a classic climb in Catalunya.
Happiest on gravel, these are the tours Taylor most looks forward of the year. A former pro rider, Taylor is one of our lead guides who spends his year running trips in Morocco, Mallorca, Italy and our gravel tours. He is knowledgeable about all things bike and super friendly. You are in safe hands!
Another keen gravel rider, Adam is our head mechanic on this tour. He can match anyone in an eating contest and knows a thing or two about bikes. He will be on hand to build and pack bikes and will have the bike stand up every day to work on anything needed.
This long weekend of gravel grinding takes in three main stages. The offroad nature of this itinerary means your ride guides will carry more spares and we will rendezvous less often with our follow vehicle but there will be plenty of opportunity to top up.
Our rides are:
Arrival Day: A short 40km ride to get used to the surface
Stage One: Up into the trees – A stunning, lumpy adventure into the forests of the Massís de les Gavarres
Stage Two: To the beach! A longer flatter ride takes us over 116km to the coast and back. Lunch on the beach will make it a day to remember.
Stage Three: To finish off we ride to Lake Banyoles and up the famous Rocacorba Climb before heading back for a final cervesa on the terrace.
Our four night break starts on Wednesday and the main rides are Thursday, Friday and Saturday. We stay just above the main town for all four nights within walking distance of the citys bars, restaurants, cafes and bike shops.
Arrival day. We depart Barcelona at 1130am getting to Girona at 1pm in time for lunch, bike building and an afternoon ride. This afternoons ride is a short 40km circuit mostly on gravel to get used to the surface and make sure bikes and legs are in order for the longer rides to come. In the evening we have our welcome dinner where our team will talk you through the rides for the long weekend.
We roll out at 10am and head straight up into the forests above town, we intersect with some known road climbs occasionally but spend most of our time in perfect isolation enjoying amazing gravel roads and the peacefulness of these old tracks.
An earlier 9am rollout today as we have a way to go. Taking a scenic detour through the orchards and fruit fields we wind our way through the countryside on fast gravel towards the Costa Brava and onto the beach. Some tapas and fresh fish in the sun will fuel our return journey.
We wind our way over rolling hills and farms to the Lake that hosted the Rowing for the 1992 Olympic games and up the iconic Rocacorba climb. The view will be one to remember. On return our mechanics will pack your bikes & in the evening we have our final dinner and a couple of extra beers to celebrate the weekend.
A relaxed morning before transfers back to Barcelona at 10am.
Our team will be in arrivals waiting for you. We run transfers on Wednesday and Sunday from Barcelona to Girona.
The transfer from Barcelona takes around 1h15. We get into Girona around lunchtime where our mechanics will build your bikes ready for the first ride.
We get back to Barcelona for 11am in time for the early afternoon flights home.
