Stephen, Tour of Flanders, 2017: "Organisation was perfect and marshalling superb. Hotel was great, staff were brilliant - definitely the right move to stay in Oudernaarde and will go back. "

The Routes

The 22km Time Trial route is a fairly straight forward course with some quick sections. There is a long climb / false flat leading to the half way point before a rapid descent home. There is one tight corner close to home followed by a slight incline so getting this right is crucial.
The 130km road race is over a rolling course with no steep sections or long climbs. The route takes in 3 lakes which split the race nearly into sections. The decisive part may well be a short climb in the last few kilometres between Lake Varese and the finish line.

Road Race 130km

Starting in Varese, this route takes in 3 lakes which split the course into 4 sections. Before the first lake (Lugano), there is the biggest climb of the day. After a descent to the lake we climb back out and then race along a ridge before descending to lake 2 (Maggiore). The gap to lake 3 (Varese) is the longest part at 50km, as soon as you see the last lake there is a long flat section and then a key final climb in the last few kms. The finishing straight is quick and flat making the last climb decisive.

DISTANCE  130 Km       ELEVATION  1993 M.

Where to Stay

The only option for the Granfondo weekend. Varese is the biggest town in this part of the Italian Lakes. The lake with the same name is a couple of kilometres out of town and is very pretty surrounded by mountains. The city can quite busy with parking hard to come for and heavy traffic so staying in town and riding everywhere is a lot easier.

Getting There

Fly into Milan Malpensa (MXP). We have regular bike box friendly shuttles to Varese on the Tuesday for the ITT & Friday for the Granfondo with returns on Friday & Monday. This is approx a 45 minute trip.

Documents Required

You will need your Racing License, signed medical certificate and a print out of your race number which will be emailed to you prior to the weekend.

What to Pack

There is nothing extreme in the weekend, the hills are moderate in length and moderate in gradient so a 53/39 should be fine if that's what you normally ride on. The weather should be ideal for racing but the heat waves in Europe have been late in recent years so it may be hot.
