Ride Notes

This is one of the great cycling weekends for climbers. Over 5 days you climb the Stelvio (from both sides), the Gavia & Mortirolo as well as some great local routes that many people find to be their best climb of the trip. Each of the three main riding days are tough with two or three climbs per day and over 3,000m of elevation, but the payoff is riding in a varied and stunning part of the world and ticking off some proper bucket list climbs. Bormio is the perfect town to relax after a ride with some nice ice cream shops, markets and hot springs. Bring strong legs and a big rear cassette for the ultimate Stelvio cycling holiday!

Routes Details

Route Overview

We offer 4 night breaks for the Stelvio. On arrival day you can ride the short climb to Cancano before hitting three big days. Each day features 2 or 3 climbs with over 3,000m of elevation.

Stage One

Stage One

From Bormio to Bormio

Ride Distance 100
Elevation Gain 3303

The Queen Stage of our Bormio Weekender. Starting out of Bormio we take the first part of the Stelvio, through the tunnels and over the hairpins before crossing into Switzerland and the Umbrail pass. From here it is a long descent down to Prato for the classic ascent of the Stelvio. This is the most famous side of the climb featuring 48 hairpins over 24km with an average gradient of 7.4%. From the top, you can freewheel all the way back down to Bormio, a glorious 21.5km decent.

Climbs at Stelvio

Passo dello Stelvio (Bormio)

The "easier" side of the Stelvio possibly. The climb is split into at least four sections with the start featuring old tunnels and a couple of steep sections until you hit the switchbacks. From here there is a saddle to the final kick up to the summit.

Ride Distance 21.5km
Elevation Gain 7.1%
KOM  1hr 04 mins

Passo dello Stelvio (Prato)

The harder side up the Stelvio. This is the side you see on all the pictures, with a near endless run of steep, sharp hairpins - 48 in total. The gradients rarely ease up making this a long, tough and classic climb.

Ride Distance 24.3km
Elevation Gain 7.4%
KOM  1hr 21 mins

Mortirolo (Monno)

A brutal climb in the Italian Alps which Lance Armstrong said was the hardest in cycling. The gradients hit 10% and rarely ease up for 10km, even the corners of the hairpins are steep. The ride is much lower than the Stelvio / Gavia so the views are less impressive, you wont get to enjoy it anyway as you will be using all your energy to grind up this monster.

Ride Distance 9km
Elevation Gain 8%
KOM  20 mins 50 secs

Passo Gavia (Bormio)

Another classic climb coming out of Bormio climbing to way over 2,000m. The start of the Gavia is gentle as you snake through the valley and then it picks up with some steeper gradients into the remote high mountains. Stunning views throughout makes this a very enjoyable ascent.

Ride Distance 24.8km
Elevation Gain 6%
KOM  1hr 10 mins

Stelvio Cycling Itinerary

Our Stelvio breaks run every Wednesday to Sunday from June to September. We arrive early on Wednesday in time to set bikes up and going for a quick spin and leave late morning on Sunday allowing for a very early ride if wanted while still getting you home at a reasonable hour.

Day One Wednesday

Arrive at Milan Linate before 10.30am for the transfer to Bormio. We arrive for around 2pm where our mechanic will be waiting to help build bikes. After check in to the hotel you have time to go for a warm up spin (we recommend the short climb to Cancano) before our welcome dinner at 7.30pm with a brief on the week.

Ride Distance 33 km.
Elevation Gain 911 m.

Day Two Thursday

Stelvio Loop

The queen stage. We start at 8.30am (depending on weather / time of year) and start immediately the climb to the Stelvio from Bormio. From the summit we descend down the Umbrail Pass before a quick lunch stop in Prato. From there, it is just 48 hairpins to the other side of the Stelvio and then a fun descend home.

Ride Distance 108 km.
Elevation Gain 3450 m.

Day Three Friday

Mortirolo / Gavia Loop

Another roll out at 8.30am, we descend down the valley to Grosio where you have the choice of which side to climb the mighty Mortirolo. The first side from Grosio is 14km at 8% or continue to Mazzo for the famous side, 12km at 11%. We meet at the top and then descend and ride to Ponte di Legno for lunch. From here, we climb the Gavia before descending back to Bormio.

Ride Distance 110 km.
Elevation Gain 3420 m.

Day Four Saturday

Livigno Out & Back

A "slightly" easier ride after two huge days. We roll out slightly later at 9.30am to allow for a more relaxed morning and head over to Livigno over two climbs. This is one of the pro team capitals of Europe in the summer with most teams having a base to prepare for the Tour. We have lunch after the first climb back and should be back in Bormio by 2.30pm.

Ride Distance 79 km.
Elevation Gain 2276 m.

Day Five Sunday

Bormio 2000

Our transfer home is at 11am so there is time for a very quick last ride if wanted. We head off at 8am up Bormio 2000, a 9.5km climb. Our mechanic is on hand to help with bike packing before we head back to Linate for flights home.
