After breakfast at the hotel we will head out on our first ride to the high mountains. This spectacular route takes you on the route of the famous Marmotte Gran Fondo. It’s one of the best-known and toughest Sportives in Europe, and we will tackle the two main climbs of the route, but saving Alpe d’Huez for tomorrow.

After the start in Bourg d’Oisans, the route goes over the Col du Glandon. After a stretch on the flat in the Maurienne valley to St Michel de Maurienne, next up are the Col du Telegraphe and the Col du Galibier in quick succession. After the Galibier there’s a lot of downhill as you descend the Col du Lautaret back to Bourg d’Oisans.

Hairpin curves on the route of the Alpe d'Huez Weekender

Today you will ride the epic Alpe d’Huez. Probably one of the most famous climbs in cycling and used many times in the Tour de France. With 21 hairpin turns to conquer, this is no easy day out but it will all be worth it when you reach the top!

We will start the day with a mostly flat warm-up along the valley, including a 3 mile climb to the village of Vaujany. Then it’s time for the main event, 9 miles of climbing that doesn’t drop below 7% until you reach the resort of Alpe d’Huez, where the road briefly flattens out, before the final few hundred yards up to the traditional finish line.

There will be time to recover in Alpe d’Huez and toast our achievements and admire the stunning alpine landscape, before descending back to our hotel.

The route today will take us up the Col du Sarenne, to the east of Alpe d’Huez. It featured on stage 18 of the 2013 Tour, which allowed the race to climb Alpe d’Huez twice. Our route today also includes some of the lesser known balcony roads and climbs around the valley, including Pas de la Confession. Some of these narrow single-track roads wind through picturesque alpine villages, offering a contrast to the wider roads that lead up to the more modern ski resorts.

The final miles of the weekend will be the descent of Alpe d’Huez, passing by the 21 bends, each named after a previous winner on Alpe d’Huez.

Day 4- Col De Sarenne

In the evening we will enjoy a final meal together and celebrate our achievements throughout the week.

Tour Dynamic

The Alpe d’Huez Weekender is a four-night trip for avid cyclists to ride iconic cycling climbs such as Alpe d’Huez, Col Du Galibier and Col Du Glandon. The pace you ride at, the distance you cover and the effort you put in is all determined by yourself. This trip is for cyclists of all standards, although the better prepared you are, the more you will enjoy riding in the mountains. Adaptations to routes can be made, determined on your cycling level.

More About The Event

Come and join us in the French Alps, a cycling paradise and experience a weekend like the pro peloton! You will be looked after by Mike, our local ride leader who has a wealth of experience and has ridden these routes many times. He will be on hand with you for the duration of the trip.

Alpe d’Huez

One of the most iconic climbs of the Tour de France and of cycling in general. The 21 hairpin bends up to the ‘Ile au Soleil’ are on every cyclist’s bucket list. A popular ski resort in the winter, the resort turns into a cycling mecca in the summer. Apart from the Etape and the Tour, other events in June/ July include: the Haute Route Alpe d’Huez, the Marmotte Gran Fondo Alps, the Megavalanche and the Alpe d’Huez Triathlon.

Alpe d’Huez last featured in the Tour de France in 2022. Tom Pidcock from Ineos Grenadiers became the youngest ever winner on the mythical Alpe d’Huez with a sensational solo win on Stage 12.

For training, Alpe du Zwift on Zwift is a fairly accurate representation of the climb so ideal to get stuck into over the winter!

Climbs Included

Alpe d’Huez

One of the giants of world cycling, Alpe d’Huez is not the most beautiful or difficult but it is pure cycling theatre and a climb that no other can match.
