The Southern Alps are home to some of the most famous and beautiful cycling climbs in the world. Alpe d’Huez, the Izoard, Galibier & Glandon are the most iconic but the region is packed with spectacular rides that few areas can rival. This four night break is a loop from Alpe d'Huez over the Glandon to the Telegraph / Galibier before heading south to the Izoard and a stage finish in beautiful St Veran. The final day brings us back to Alpe d'Huez to finish 4 days of world class riding.
Real Rider Reviews
One of the great climbs world cycling. We ride both sides of the Izoard (because, why not) taking in some incredible scenery including the Casse Déserte and passed the monuments of Coppi & Bobet.
The original climb of the tour. The Galibier is a legend that more than lives up to it's name. This stunning climb rolls all the way to our highest point at 2,645m
This trip is packed with bucket list climbs but we always have an eye for the new. The 10km climb up to Saint Veran is a real stunner and is our base on night three. This mountain village is as remote as it gets with views to take your breathe away.
Before Strava, one of the main ways to cut your teeth was your time on Alpe d'Huez. 37 minutes gets you on par with Lance Armstrong. 1 hour 29 puts you level with his ex, Sheryl Crow. Anywhere in between is respectful.
Host & Mechanic
John is our Alps legend having worked in a pro team and written numerous best selling cycling books. He is a source of great knowledge on the Tour and loves this part of the Alps. He is the overall tour leader who will look after anything you need and will make a mean sandwich for our picnics on the climbs.
Based in the Alps all year long, Jon rides these routes on his normal training rides and loves nothing more than taking a group of people over these climbs for the first time. Jon is also a qualified coach who has invaluable tips for improving your climbing.
This long weekend of classic climbs takes in three main stages. We move host towns each night, our team will collect your bags from reception and they will be in the new hotel for your arrival. Our road guide and support van will be there every step of the way on the road. Our stages are:
Stage One: Bourg d'Oisans to Valloire - 95km, 2900m taking in the Col du Glandon, Lacets & Telegraph
Stage Two: Valloire to Saint Veran - 93km, 3100m taking in the Galibier, Izoard & St Veran
Stage Three: Saint Veran to Alpe d'Huez - 118km, 2900m taking in the Izoard & Alpe d'Huez
One of the highest paved passes in Europe at over 2,600m. This is a glorious, varied climb with hugh views in all directions. Enjoy!
One of our favourite climbs in world cycling. Starting with the gauge ride from Giullestre, the climb proper starts as you turn left off the main road and gets more and more beautiful. As you get close to the top you see the famous memorials to Coppi and Bobet as you ride through cliffs with amazing views down the valley.
One of the most famous climbs in the world, the 21 hairpins from Bourg d'Oisans to Alpe d'Huez. A relentless climb averaging 7-9% the whole way.
Our four night break starts on Wednesday and the main rides are Thursday, Friday and Saturday. We move hotels each day, our team will take your bags from reception and they will be in the next hotel before you arrive.
Arrival day. We depart Geneva at 5pm getting to Bourg d'Oisans at 7pm in time for dinner and time for our mechanics to build bikes before the start tomorrow.
We roll out at 9am with some flat (don't get used to it) before hitting the mighty Col du Glandon. From here we descend to La Chambre before scaling the Lacets de Montvernier with 17 hairpins in 2.5km and then roll down the valley to the final climb of the day, the Col du Telegraph which ends in our stage town of Valloire.
Three climbs today featuring two of the most famous mountain passes in cycling. From Valloire we are straight onto the Galibier reaching our highest point of the tour before the long descent all the way to Briancon. The next climb awaits and it's a beauty. The Col d'Izoard is spectacular and another above 2,000m. After lunch we roll down and take on the final climb of the day, the stunning 10km ascent to our stage town of Saint Veran.
We start with a descent out of Saint Veran
Departure day. We pack up bikes the previous evening so you can enjoy a slow morning before jumping in the van back to Geneva for 11am.
Our team will be in arrivals waiting for you. We run transfers on Wednesday and Sunday from Lyon to Bourg d'Oisans.
The transfer from Geneva takes around 2 hours. We get into Bourg d'Oisans early evening where our mechanics will build your bikes ready for the first ride.
We get back to Geneva for 11am in time for the early afternoon flights home.
Our four night breaks include return airport transfers, accommodation, breakfast, dinners and all your ride support. Our average group size is 8-12 and we have a road guide and mechanic in a support van to guide you on all the rides. Choose between a single room or twin / double package for two people.
