Girona Self-Guided Road Cycling with Sportive Breaks
Overview
- Spread your payments: Our payment plan is an interest-free payment method where you will have the opportunity to spread payment for your booking.
- Best months to ride around Girona: March, April, May, September, October and November.
- Climb Santa Pellaia and Els Angels: Tackle some of the climbs closest to Girona including Els Angels, Santa Pellaia, Puig Alt and Puig Vinyoles or follow the pros into the Montseny Massif, where they train for the big Grand Tour climbs.
- Relax in medieval Girona: Girona has some fabulous restaurants and wonderful architecture. The Cathedral has the widest Gothic nave in the world (22m wide).
Girona has an excellent pedigree in the cycling world and is regularly chosen as a cycling base from which the pro peloton explore the Catalunya landscape. With Sportive Breaks you can now enjoy the same routes, the cycling culture, great restaurants and architecture of Girona under your own steam with a self-guided road cycling holiday. This type of trip provides the freedom to explore without having to get up and ready to join a group ride with people of different abilities. It allows you to head out at whatever time you like on a ride that suits you for distance, elevation and to take in the parts of the local area you want to visit on any particular day.
We’ll provide you with a GPS navigation app with a selection of routes to ride during your stay; whether it’s more leisurely gravel cycling along a via verde (old train lines converted to cycling tracks) or something more challenging by heading over the hills immediately to the East of Girona and on across the Emporda plain to the coast, or West into the Montseny Massif. You may even spot some pros out and about while you’re cycling – they choose this area because of the ease of access to a choice of training roads as well as a good temperate climate, with temperatures ranging from 13°C in the winter to 30°C in the summer!
How many nights you stay is also up to you – we have a selection of hotels and durations from 4 to 7 nights, but if you want to stay for a longer or shorter period of time just let us know and we’ll tailor the trip to your requirements. Half Board, private transfers and bike rental (or e-bikes) can also be included in your tailored package.
Itinerary
Day To Day
On arrival, you can take the train from Barcelona Airport to Barcelona Sants and on to Girona. The hotels are a short walk from the station. Alternatively your private transfer (if you’ve included this in your booking) will be waiting for you to drive you to your hotel in Girona – approximately 90 minutes away. If you’re planning to bring your own bike, this will need to be added to your transfer request and will be transported with you (unless there are 5 or more in your group – as a result the bike transport will be a separate vehicle).
Depending on your arrival and departure times, you may be able to squeeze in some cycling time on your arrival and departure days – please ensure you have included enough bike rental time for this if you’re renting a bike to be picked up in Girona.
It’s entirely up to you how you plan your cycling schedule during your stay. There are plenty of routes that set off from a central point in Girona, so you can choose your route for each day and also when you wish to rest and relax. Below are a few examples of route options:
- Sant Gregori loop – 54km +664m
- Rocacorba and Bunyoles Lake – 74km +1,300m
- Begur and the coast – 106km +1462m
- Calonge coastal loop – 139km +2,030m
- Mar de Deu del Mont – 126km +1,963m
- Cap de Creus loop – 156km +1,589m
- Sant Hilari & Panta de Susqueda 105km, +1,250m
After breakfast your transfer to Barcelona Airport takes approximately 90 minutes.

Six good reasons why you should experience Italian roads
Six good reasons why you should experience Italian roads By Ross Litherland | 12/04/2024 I’m wondering if Italy is the number one place to ride your bike in Europe, but it’s often over-shadowed (perhaps unfairly) by France and Spain.
