Riders at the beginning of the Vuelta Asturias trip

Following breakfast we will head in search of the rugged Basque coastline. This will be a great chance to get familiar with your bike and roll out the legs.

The beginning of the ride will follow sections of tomorrow’s Stage 11 route. The first challenge will be the ‘San Pelayo’ climb, a 4km climb with a 7.5% average grade. You will see first-hand the type of terrain that the riders will be up against tomorrow.

At the top of the climb we will be sure to show you the lookout point over to ‘San Juan de Gaztelugatxe’. This is a small island that has been connected to the mainland via an impressive staircase and houses a small chapel at the top – talk about emblematic! Post-ride and back in Bilbao there will be time for an afternoon visit to the Guggenheim Museum. The Guggenheim has really put Bilbao on the map and it always is a highly recommended cultural experience.

Evening meal at the hotel.

Bilbao – Bilbao

Riders passing through Basque countryside during the Vuelta Asturias trip

Today the race will showcase a stage which starts and finishes in Bilbao. There are some beautiful coastal and inland roads immediately to the north of Bilbao to enjoy so why not join us on a morning ride covering approximately 90km and 1,500m of climbing?

The cycling route on offer includes what we believe is some of the most rewarding road cycling in Basque Country. In particular, the Balcon de Bizkaia climb awaits! Starting from Guernika township (which is also the name of what is probably Pablo Picasso’s most famous painting) there is a 14km climb at 3% average grade up to the ‘Balcon’.

For those looking for a challenge, the climb to ‘Oiz’ could now be treated as an optional extra. Oiz measures 5km and its 12% average grade makes for a real workout. There are no less than 12 ramps which range between 15-25% – a real challenge! This is a special category climb which is not included in the 2025 race. However, it makes for a great detour and was last used as a summit finish during Stage 17 of the 2018 race. We will have you back in time to watch the stage finish in Bilbao later in the afternoon. This will be a lot of fun as the Basque love cycling and they also know how to enjoy themselves!

Laredo
Mechanics fix bikes for Team Visma Lease a Bike ahead of the Renewi Tour

Today we head in search of the 2025 Stage 12 start. The peloton will ride out from the lovely coastal village of Laredo. Laredo has one of the most expansive beaches in northern Spain and is always a favourite with race organisers. We will ride out from one of the nearby Bilbao beaches and through to Laredo in time to get close to the team buses and riders at the stage start.

Our ride will begin in Basque Country and cross into the Cantabrian countryside. There will be a couple of 5-7km climbs to contend with which average around the 6% grade. Tomorrow there is the mighty Angliru climb to conquer so we will need to keep the ride distance and elevation gain in check today.

As the peloton departs Laredo we will transfer 2.5hr in the vans to our spa hotel in Las Caldas (Oviedo) which will be home for the next 3 nights. Now we are in perfect striking distance for L’Angliru tomorrow!

L’Angliru

Birds eye view of the Vuelta Asturias route

Road cycling enthusiasts will know all too well that Asturias since the 1980s has been home to some of the most iconic stages in this race. In no time at all, climbs such as Lagos de Covadonga, La Cobertoria and El Angliru have become household names.

Today is all about taking advantage of riding L’Angliru only hours before the professionals. Are you ready? El ‘Alto del Angliru’ was first introduced by the race organisers during 1999. The 12.5km climb with 10.2% average grade puts it in the top 3 of all European road cycling climbs in our opinion. After that, the numbers get even higher; the final 6.5km average 13.5% with half a dozen extended ramps ranging between 19 to 23.5%. ‘Un autentico infierno’ as the locals would say!

A rider celebrates having got to the end of the Vuelta Asturias trip

Today we head ‘back in time’ to ride an important section of the 2024 Stage 15 race. We will use our Asturian base to also tackle the gruelling ‘Puerto de Pajares’ and ‘Cuitu Negru’ double climb. Following a 25min drive we will be near the base and ready to ride towards a major summit finish from last year’s race. Cuitu Negru is a narrow asphalted road which finishes at the top of the Valgrande ski station.

Cuitu Negru has only been used twice on this race – the 4WD track was asphalted specially for the 2012 race! The summit of the climb is situated 3km above the Puerto de Pajares climb. The two climbs when combined include 19km at a 7% average grade. It is the 3 final kilometres though which offer the challenge. An inconsistent 13% average awaits with a number of ramps touching 20 and 22%.

Now that you have added another summit to your cycling CV it will be time to enjoy the ride and descend towards Leon. Post ride there will be a 1hr drive to Astorga which is the final tour night destination. Astorga is located on the Camino de Santiago pilgrim route and even houses architecture from none other than Gaudi!
