More about the event

La Marmotte

La Marmotte is known to be one of the hardest Sportives to participate in. Taking place in June this year, our travel packages include tackling 4 alpine climbs which have become legendary thanks to the Tour de France. This route is a serious challenge and a fantastic achievement!

What is La Marmotte Gran Fondo Alps?

La Marmotte is the ultimate cycling test and also the oldest sportive in the cycling calendar. At 174km, this one-day classic conquers famous climbs from the Tour de France including the Galibier, the Glandon and the Croix de Fer. The Marmotte has one cut-off point. You need to have passed the start of the Alpe d’Huez climb in Bourg d’Oisans before 18:15pm otherwise you will be eliminated from the race. If you’re eliminated your bike will go on a bike trailer and you will be transported to the finish in Alpe d’Huez. Once you finish in Alpe d’Huez, there’s no need to worry as you are staying near the finish.

First held in 1982, this is still one of the most popular cycling events in the world and a bucket list Sportive all riders should try at least once.

Sportive Options

The famous La Marmotte Granfondo Alps finishes with the legendary Alpe d’Huez. The famous 21 hairpin bends must be conquered before the final release of the finish. It takes courage to overcome the 174 kilometres and 5,000 altimeters of this epic cycling challenge.

The route features 6 of the most legendary passes in France; in order of appearance on the route – the Glandon, the Croix de Fer, the Telegraphe, the Galibier, the Lautaret, and finally the final ascent of Alpe d’Huez. Whether you aim for a certain time or you just want to finish, every participant leaves Alpe d’Huez with a satisfying feeling and bragging rights knowing that they have conquered this challenge.

FAQs

The date for the 2025 Marmotte is Sunday 22 June 2025
The Granfondo route is a real challenge for cyclists who are in good condition and who train regularly and are used to riding in conditions with sufficient gradients.
A frame identification and timing plate to be fixed to the front of your handlebars. • A route description sticker • A souvenir gift. • Timing with the help of a chip at the back of your frame plate • Access to refreshment points adapted to each distance of the course. • Mechanical support and first aid service • The scratch and category rankings for the Granfondo and Grimpée routes (times in alphabetical order for the Rando des Marmottes). • Finisher diploma on our website • A finisher’s medal. • A Pasta Party after the finish • Specific to the Rando des Marmottes: luggage transport included on both days.
To take part in Marmotte Granfondo you must provide a medical certificate or a competitive cycling license. The Medical certificate must certify that you are fit to cycle competitively. It must be dated, signed, and stamped by your doctor. Under French Law, the medical certificate is valid for 1 year and must therefore be valid on the day of the event. For licences only UCI, FFC, FFTRI(for females), FFGT and Ufolep licences (of a competitive nature with a medical check-up), valid for the current season and less than one year old. In the case of foreign licences, the licence is valid if a medical examination was required in return. We only accept competitive cycling licences.
During a cyclosportive event, cyclists are obliged to respect the highway code. The courses are not closed to traffic. The safety and support system and the marshals will help cyclists to ensure their safety and that of other road users. All cyclists must ensure their own safety and adapt their speed to the route, traffic, and weather conditions.
In order not to jeopardise the safety of the event, and in accordance with prefectural orders, it is forbidden to use a following vehicle (car, van, motorbike, scooter). Refuelling and technical assistance from cars or motorbikes are prohibited. Refuelling and additional assistance are authorised set back from the road, on the right-hand side of the road and with the bike stationary. Areas used by feeders (car parks, etc.) must be kept clean.
For minor repairs such as punctures, you need to have the necessary equipment. If you are unable to continue your journey because of a mechanical problem, you can take a seat in the broom wagon. You will however have to wait. If you are the cause of or witness to an accident, or if you notice someone needs medical assistance, each participant is obliged to stop and render assistance and alert the emergency services by calling the emergency number on the back of your frame plate.
Yes, some of the tunnels have little or no lighting. Good lighting (front and rear lighting kit) is mandatory, and a visibility waistcoat must be worn. Participants will be checked at the start and/or on the course. If it is found that the lighting kit is missing, exclusion will be immediate and without recourse. The road, police and gendarmerie services can also ban and fine participants.
There is always an emergency number. It is written in the information for the race of the day and on the back of your frame plate. Remember to fill in your personal details on the back of your frame number (name, race number, emergency contact number, etc.) and keep it with you throughout the event.
You can find the results and rankings directly on the RESULTS tab of the official Marmotte website. A finishers diploma is available once your time has been checked and validated.
A meal voucher is supplied with your registration pack (Granfondo, Rando des Marmottes). The Pasta Party is available on a self-service basis after you arrive at the event village in Alpe d’Huez.
Start pens are allocated automatically when you register, based on your previous results in our events. In exceptional circumstances, we can move you to another Start Pen on request and with proof of your results, subject to the number of places available. In all cases, you will have to wait until you get your race number before you can change it. It is not possible to change starting pens on the morning of the event. If you have not taken part in the Marmotte Grandondo Alpes, your starting open will be based on your estimated race time.
The Granfondo starts at dawn in the heart of the village Bourg d’Osians. Once the bell rings, all the tension evaporates with the first pedal strokes to the cheers of the fans.
Most tour operators tend to have accommodation based on top of Alpe by the finish as well as near Bourg d’Osians. A lot of people prefer to stay within Bourg to avoid the cold descent to the start on the morning of the event whilst others trade this to be closer to the finish line.
