Day Four - Stage 19 - Vélez-Málaga → Peñas Blancas

Date

Friday 11 September 2026

Location

Estepona

We are checking out of the hotel today. After breakfast we will load up our vehicles and you can join us for our longest and hardest ride of the week. Like every day you can decide to join us for the full ride or spend some of the journey on one of the support vehicles.

Ride from the hotel to the Penas Blancas Stage 19 summit finish. The route will take us through Montejaque and Jubrique.

Stage 19 of the 2026 Vuelta is a big one: a 205 km ride from Vélez‑Málaga to Peñas Blancas in Estepona, finishing on a tough Category 1 climb. It comes right after the time trial and just before the queen stage, so expect fireworks—GC riders will either defend or attack hard here. The route is hilly, with mid-stage climbs and a brutal uphill finish, perfect for breakaways or late moves. Heat in Andalusia could add extra drama. In short: a tactical, high-stakes day that could reshape the race before the Sierra Nevada showdown.

Post stage we will drive two hours to the next hotel on our tour in Almuñecar on the Costa Tropical. Here we will check in, get settled for the night and enjoy the evening meal together. We stay here this evening to be in a good position for tomorrow.

Daily Highlights

Ride

COSTA TROPICAL

Almuñécar is a historic coastal town on Spain’s Costa Tropical in Granada province, known for its subtropical microclimate, beautiful beaches (like Velilla & San Cristobal), ancient Phoenician & Roman roots (Sexi), Moorish castle (Castillo de San Miguel), lush botanical parks (El Majuelo), and charming old town with whitewashed houses and tapas bars.

Location

Granada

We are checking out of the hotel today and moving to Granada where we will be staying for the final 3 nights of our tour.

Ride straight off the beach and onto the famous Cabra climb which was the old road to Granada. Spain’s version of Col d’Izoard! Ride direct to the Guejar Sierra township where all the Stage 20 race action will be playing out.

Stage 20 of the 2026 Vuelta a España is set to be the queen stage of the entire race — a brutal finale that could be decisive for the red jersey. Classified as a mountain stage, it features over 5,000 m of climbing, culminating in the tough Hors Catégorie ascent to Collado del Alguacil — one of the hardest climbs in the race.

After the stage we will go to our hotel in Granada where we will enjoy the evening meal together.

GRANADA

Granada is a historic city in the Andalusia region of southern Spain. The city is famous for the stunning Moorish palace complex, the Alhambra. For cyclists and skiers Granada is close to the Sierra Nevada mountains Highlights of Granada are the rich Islamic & Christian history, vibrant student life, free tapas culture, flamenco, and beautiful architecture like the Albayzín quarter. It was the last Muslim stronghold in Spain, falling in 1492, leaving a unique cultural legacy reflected in its monuments, narrow streets, and traditions.

Stage 21 – Granada – Granada

The final stage of the 2026 Tour of Spain is not in Madrid but in Granada. This will not be a sprint stage as the stage has a technical uphill finish near the famous Alhambra. A finishing circuit is completed 5 times, and each features a partially cobbled climb. This looks like a fitting tribute to a Vuelta built on surprise climbs, circuit finales, and raw Andalusian flair.

After the stage we will enjoy the evening meal together at the hotel.
