More about the Maratona dles Dolomites
Maratona dles Dolomites
The Maratona dles Dolomites is one of the world’s most iconic gran fondos, taking riders through the spectacular Dolomite Mountains of northern Italy. The full Maratona course covers approximately 138 km with 4,230 m of climbing, combining stunning scenery with relentless mountain ascents. This Gran Fondo is a serious challenge and a fantastic achievement for any amateur cyclist!
One of the unique features of the Maratona dles Dolomites is that you do not need to decide in advance which route you’ll ride. All participants start together on the same course and choose their distance at designated route split points during the event.
The Maratona dles Dolomites offers three distance options, all starting and finishing in La Villa, Alta Badia:
- Sellaronda – 55 km distance and 1,780 m of climbing. The shortest option, completing the four classic Sella Ronda passes: Campolongo, Pordoi, Sella and Gardena.
- Medium Course – 106 km distance and 3,130 m of climbing. Includes the Sella Ronda loop plus Passo Giau, then returns without tackling Falzarego and Valparola.
- Maratona Course – 138 km distance and 4,230 m of climbing. The full route featuring Campolongo (twice), Pordoi, Sella, Gardena, Giau, Falzarego and Valparola, plus the final Mür dl Giat ramp.
Maratona dles Dolomites route
The ride begins with the famous Sella Ronda loop, tackling four classic Dolomite passes:
- Passo Campolongo. (1,875 m). 5.8 km climb. Average gradient: 6.1%
- Passo Pordoi (2,239 m) 9.2 km climb. Average gradient: 6.9%
- Passo Sella (2,244 m). 5.5 km climb. Average gradient: 7.9%
- Passo Gardena (2,121 m). 5.8 km climb. Average gradient: 4.3%
After descending back into Alta Badia, riders cross Campolongo a second time before heading towards the event’s signature challenge.
The Decisive Climb: Passo Giau
The route then turns south to tackle Passo Giau, widely regarded as the toughest climb of the day:
- 9.9 km long
- 922 m elevation gain
- Average gradient: 9.3%
- Sections reaching 15%
This is often where riders are most seriously tested.
Final Mountain Passes
Following Giau, the route climbs:
- Passo Falzarego
- Passo Valparola (2,200 m)
Although less steep than Giau, these climbs come late in the ride when fatigue is building.
The Sting in the Tail
Before returning to La Villa, riders face the legendary Mür dl Giat, a short but brutally steep ramp:
- 370 m long
- Maximum gradient: 19%
