5-13 August

The 2023 UCI Road Cycling World Championships will take place across central Scotland – with each race reaching a thrilling conclusion on the tight and technical streets of Glasgow. The Elite Men will be making their way west from their start in Edinburgh, while the U23 Men and the Elite & U23 Women will head east from Loch Lomond into Glasgow city centre. The Juniors and the Mixed Relay Time Trial will use the Glasgow course to complete the required laps. The courses are still classified information at this stage, but we can expect to see iconic Scottish landmarks, challenging climbs and plenty of opportunities for breakaways to make their make on the race. Road racing is a classic format – the first rider over the line wins. However, there is a lot that can happen between the start and finish and a high degree of tactics and teamwork come into play. Each member of the team will be representing their team, a change from their usual trade teams and well-practiced lead-out trains. If a breakaway gets away a solo or smaller group of riders could stay out in front and have to use all their skills to get around the laps of Glasgow city centre – or we could see a thrilling bunch sprint into George Square. You don’t want to miss this unique opportunity to watch this thrilling event – Expect a large bunch sprint, eyewatering speeds and team-work aplenty!

About the Event

The 2023 UCI Road Race World Championships will take place in Scotland for the first time, following the success of the 2014 Commonwealth Games and the 2018 Elite European Road Race Championships. In 2018 both Matthieu van der Poel and Wout van Aert made it onto the podium in Glasgow, taking silver and bronze respectively. They will be the big names to watch in the Men’s Elite road race, with Tom Pidcock the key British interest in the race who will be looking to take home the rainbow jersey.

Remco Evenepoel is the reigning Elite Men’s Road Race Champion, having claimed victory in Wollongong in 2022. The Elite Women’s race will be a tight affair with defending champion Annemiek van Vleuten keen to retain her stripes before hanging up her wheels in retirement at the end of this year.

Welsh rider Zoe Backstedt will be a key rider to watch in the Women’s U23 race – she successfully defended her Junior World Championship title in 2022 in Wollongong and will be looking to keep the rainbow jersey in her first year as an U23.

Important information

This event takes place outdoors, so you should be prepared for all weather seasons that Scotland is so famous for. It is worth packing a small rainproof jacket, as well as sunscreen and sunglasses. Hospitality tickets will include access to a covered area, however spectators can line the streets of the city looking for the best viewing areas so you should make sure you have everything you need for a day outdoors.
